How did WLVHS Esports earn the state title? The short answer would be the new class 3A team points record of 132 points. But, here are the numbers that led to this. There were a total of 27 students on the team. This season New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) and their partner company PlayVs sanctioned 8 game titles. League of Legends, Splatoon 3, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, NBA2K, Rocket League, Madden, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Hearthstone. The team fielded at least one varsity in all of these game titles. Each of these teams competed in an 11 week regular season, beginning in January and ending in April. At that point the NMAA & PlayVs reviewed team records and standings in each game title. A team's standing earned from 1 to 15 points towards the overall team title. WLVHS Esports earned a class 3A record 87 points at the end of the regular season.
During the postseason teams earned additional points for advancing in their tournament bracket. Teams could earn 1, 2, 4 (4th place), 7 (3rd place), 10 (2nd place), or 15 (1st place) points. WLVHS Esports earned 45 postseason points, this includes an individual championship for the Rocket League team (15 points), a state runner-up finish for the Splatoon team (10 points), and a third place finish for the Mario Kart team (7 points). The 45 postseason points were added to the 87 regular season points earned and the final team total was a dominant 132 points. That total was the 3rd most points scored across all 5 classifications, 84 participating schools. Only 5A schools Clovis and La Cueva earned more points. This season the NMAA crowned overall champions in all five classifications A, 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A. WLVHS Esports was crowned the overall 3A State Champion. Once a State Champion, Always a State Champion!
